Judy,

I've found for me, over the years and having gone back and forth bet. zooms and primes, that my images are stronger and i've felt more connected to the moments I'm capturing when I'm working with primes. In the end I don't want to have to think about one more thing, the zoom length, while i'm all tensed up trying to capture a moment and put myself in position and deal with all the matrix of technical considerations.

I actually find myself looking for more creative angles, places to stand ... and I like getting the changes in focal lengths that way. Makes me think more creatively. Its definitely been a positive change for me :)

Kate Mefford, you GET kids. I don't do much in the way of kids and families except my own and generally I think most people treat them like compositional elements – don't get me going on that whole portrait thing these days! You, however, my dear, get their little personalities and do a phenomenal job at getting in close, at their level and really understanding what it means to be in their little world. It's honest and real and awesome.

I didn't know about it before hand. The Bride and her mom booked me, and when I heard the groom's last name I was suspicious so I googled his last name + zebra and landed on his Dad's facebook page. It's kind of exciting and a little nerve-wracking to be shooting someone from such a prominent family.

Engagements. He is not really into photos and she has an eye condition that renders her eyes constantly bloodshot and highly sensitive (she has to wear sunglasses / keep eyes shut almost all the time during the day). Great challenges and we had a hilarious time.

Had a cam webinar this week that was an absolute disaster technically, but my model, Bianca, was awesome. My best friend's 21 year old. Do you have any idea how weird it is photographing someone that I knew before she was an idea in her mother's mind ;) Easy because I knew her so well, but hard because I still think of her as a baby :D

Go Milla, Go! I'm so happy when I see other photographers getting in the trenches to help an animal shelter! I love the pics! You are photoshopping out the leash on these? Yes? I'm always interested in setup and strategies now that I do these as well.

Thanks, Britt! Yes, I photoshopped out the leashes - it was a bright green distracting leash. But, that certainly isn't necessary! Next time, I might not, as it did take quite a bit of time.

I'd love to see your shelter work, too. Is it on your site?

Cool! I try to remember to get them to use a black leash, but it's random. Standby for a digression. I made a FB page for the local shelter support group, and have just started a FB page for the local shelter. I take photos once a week (as needed) and then put them on the pet internet search engines and take care of all of that. I also print pics to put at local businesses, etc. It's a lot of effort, but it's satisfying. Both of those sites are linked from my FB page. The vast majority of my pics are fairly standard, because I shoot 5-10 dogs in an hour and just want to get everyone listed. When I particularly like the look of one (for a fundraiser calendar project I'm brewing) then I take longer with that dog. Better pictures can singlehandedly dramatically increase adoption rates. That's all there is to it, and I have the numbers to prove it. People will drive hours and hours to adopt a pet they fell in love with from a photo online. Now I'm trying to help other shelters get better pictures (advice) to help their adoption rates, but that's not been as easy as just stepping in and taking it on at the local shelter. End of digression, but it's a worthy cause, and I wish you all the best with it.
